Our Integrative Medicine Approach

Integrative medicine represents the future of healthcare: a patient-centered, evidence-based model that combines the best of conventional Western medicine with validated complementary therapies and a deep understanding of the body's innate capacity for self-repair. At WellLife, we do not reject conventional medicine; we expand it. When a pharmaceutical intervention is the best tool, we prescribe it. When a botanical, nutritional, or acupuncture-based approach achieves equal or superior outcomes with fewer adverse effects, we choose that path. The patient's optimal health outcome is always the deciding factor.

The Science of Whole-Person Healing

What Is Integrative Medicine?

The Academic Consortium for Integrative Medicine and Health, composed of over 70 North American medical schools, defines integrative medicine as "the practice of medicine that reaffirms the importance of the relationship between practitioner and patient, focuses on the whole person, is informed by evidence, and makes use of all appropriate therapeutic and lifestyle approaches, healthcare professionals, and disciplines to achieve optimal health and healing."

In practical terms, this means that when you walk into our Portland clinic, we do not evaluate you as a collection of isolated organ systems. A patient presenting with migraine headaches, for example, is not simply prescribed a triptan and sent home. We investigate the neurological, hormonal, gastrointestinal, musculoskeletal, nutritional, and psychoemotional contributors that may be driving the migraine pattern. Magnesium deficiency, cervical spinal misalignment, estrogen dominance, food sensitivities (particularly tyramine, histamine, and glutamate), sleep apnea, and chronic stress are all well-documented migraine triggers that conventional neurology appointments rarely have time to evaluate comprehensively.

Our integrative approach addresses all of these contributing factors simultaneously using multiple therapeutic modalities coordinated into a single, coherent treatment plan. This is not about choosing between Western medicine and alternative therapy. It is about using every evidence-based tool available, from pharmaceutical interventions and advanced laboratory diagnostics to acupuncture, herbal medicine, nutritional biochemistry, and mind-body practices, in service of the patient's complete recovery.

Clinical Framework

The Five Pillars of Integrative Care

Our clinical model rests on five interconnected pillars. Each patient's treatment plan draws from one or more of these modalities based on their unique diagnostic findings and health objectives.

1

Functional Diagnostics & Systems Biology

The foundation of our clinical practice is rigorous diagnostic investigation. Using the Institute for Functional Medicine (IFM) matrix model, we evaluate seven core physiological systems: assimilation (digestion and absorption), defense and repair (immune function), energy production (mitochondria and cellular metabolism), biotransformation and elimination (liver detoxification), transport (cardiovascular and lymphatic), communication (hormones and neurotransmitters), and structural integrity (musculoskeletal and cellular membranes). By mapping your symptoms to these interconnected nodes, we identify which systems are most compromised and prioritize interventions accordingly.

Advanced functional lab panels provide the objective data behind this systems-level analysis. We routinely order comprehensive metabolic panels, full thyroid cascades (TSH, free T3, free T4, reverse T3, TPO and TG antibodies), DUTCH Complete hormone profiles, GI-MAP stool DNA analysis, organic acids tests, micronutrient panels, advanced lipid profiles (LDL particle number and size), fasting insulin, homocysteine, and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein. These tests reveal subclinical patterns months or years before they progress to diagnosable disease.

2

Botanical & Nutritional Medicine

Therapeutic-grade botanical medicines and targeted nutritional supplementation form a critical pillar of our treatment approach. Unlike mass-market supplements, we prescribe pharmaceutical-grade formulations from practitioners-only brands (Thorne Research, Pure Encapsulations, Designs for Health, Metagenics) that undergo third-party testing for purity, potency, and bioavailability. Evidence-based botanicals in our clinical toolkit include ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) for HPA axis modulation and cortisol regulation, curcumin phytosome (Meriva) for NF-kB inflammatory pathway inhibition, berberine for insulin sensitization and antimicrobial activity, and rhodiola rosea for cognitive performance under stress.

Our clinical nutrition protocols go far beyond generic dietary advice. We use advanced testing to identify specific micronutrient deficiencies, food sensitivities (IgG and IgE-mediated), and metabolic bottlenecks that inform highly individualized meal frameworks. Therapeutic diets such as the Autoimmune Protocol (AIP), specific carbohydrate diet (SCD), low-FODMAP, Mediterranean anti-inflammatory, and time-restricted eating are prescribed based on objective laboratory findings, not trends.

3

Acupuncture & Energy Medicine

Acupuncture is one of the most thoroughly researched complementary therapies in modern medicine, with over 14,000 peer-reviewed studies documenting its efficacy. At WellLife, our acupuncture program integrates classical Five Element theory, Traditional Chinese Medicine pattern differentiation, and modern neuroanatomical understanding of how needle stimulation modulates the nervous system. Current research demonstrates that acupuncture activates the parasympathetic nervous system, stimulates endorphin and enkephalin release, reduces pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-6, TNF-alpha), modulates hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis activity, and improves local microcirculation at the site of needle insertion. These mechanisms explain its demonstrated efficacy for chronic pain, migraine prevention, anxiety and depression, insomnia, nausea, and fertility optimization.

4

Mind-Body Connection & Stress Medicine

The psychoneuroimmunology literature has firmly established that chronic psychological stress directly suppresses immune function, disrupts hormonal signaling, increases intestinal permeability (leaky gut), elevates systemic inflammation, and accelerates cellular aging through telomere shortening. Our mind-body medicine program addresses these pathways through structured clinical interventions including Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), clinical breathwork for vagal tone enhancement, heart rate variability (HRV) biofeedback training, guided visualization, and somatic experiencing for trauma-related stress responses. These are not relaxation luxuries; they are clinically validated therapeutic modalities with measurable biochemical and immunological outcomes.

5

Lifestyle Medicine & Preventive Optimization

The American College of Lifestyle Medicine identifies six pillars of evidence-based lifestyle intervention: whole-food nutrition, regular physical activity, restorative sleep, stress management, social connection, and avoidance of risky substances. At WellLife, we embed these lifestyle interventions into every patient's treatment plan because no supplement, herb, or acupuncture session can overcome the physiological damage caused by chronic sleep deprivation, sedentary living, or social isolation. We help patients build sustainable daily routines that optimize circadian rhythm alignment, support mitochondrial biogenesis through appropriate exercise prescription, improve sleep architecture, and reduce environmental toxin exposure from household chemicals, personal care products, and dietary contaminants.

Clinical Expertise

Conditions We Treat

Our integrative approach is particularly effective for complex, chronic, and multisystem conditions that have not responded adequately to conventional care alone.

Thyroid & Autoimmune Disorders

Hashimoto's thyroiditis, Graves' disease, subclinical hypothyroidism, rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus, psoriasis, celiac disease, and multiple sclerosis. We address immune dysregulation at its source through gut healing, food sensitivity elimination, environmental trigger removal, and targeted immune modulation.

Digestive & Gut Health

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), intestinal permeability (leaky gut), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), chronic constipation, acid reflux (GERD), food sensitivities, and candida overgrowth. Our 5R gut restoration protocol systematically removes irritants, replaces deficiencies, reinoculates beneficial flora, repairs the mucosal lining, and rebalances the ecosystem.

Hormonal Imbalance

PCOS, estrogen dominance, perimenopause and menopause, andropause (male hormone decline), adrenal fatigue, cortisol dysregulation, and thyroid-hormone conversion issues. We use DUTCH testing and salivary cortisol mapping to create precise hormonal rebalancing protocols using botanical adaptogens, bioidentical hormones when indicated, and lifestyle modifications.

Chronic Pain & Inflammation

Fibromyalgia, chronic back and joint pain, migraines and tension headaches, neuropathy, and post-surgical pain. Our multimodal pain protocol integrates acupuncture, anti-inflammatory nutrition, curcumin and omega-3 therapy, electroacupuncture, cupping, and movement rehabilitation.

Fatigue & Energy Disorders

Chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS), persistent unexplained exhaustion, post-viral fatigue, mitochondrial dysfunction, and iron deficiency anemia. We evaluate adrenal function, thyroid optimization, mitochondrial cofactors (CoQ10, PQQ, NAD+), sleep architecture, and hidden infections contributing to persistent energy depletion.

Mental Health & Cognitive Function

Anxiety, depression, brain fog, ADHD-like symptoms, insomnia, and stress-related cognitive decline. We investigate neuroinflammation, neurotransmitter imbalances, nutrient deficiencies (B12, folate, omega-3, vitamin D, magnesium), gut-brain axis dysfunction, and HPA axis dysregulation as contributing factors.
